| Dear friend, |
I still have the key to a flat I moved out of years ago, and it is on the ring with the keys I use every day.
Taking it off would cost me nothing, so the reason it is still there is not effort, and I have stopped pretending I know what it is.
Keys come up in dreams more than almost anything else that small and that dull, which puzzled me for a while, until I started paying attention to what was on the other side of them, and that took me longer than it should have.
Because a key is not very interesting for what it explains about last night, and it is quite interesting for what it says is about to be put in your hand.
A key is a permission
Nobody dreams about a key as an object, because a key is dull on its own and only matters for what it is attached to, so what the sleeping mind hands you when it hands you a key is permission.
The ones people remember are the near misses, the key that turns most of the way, the door that opens onto a wall, since a dream that meant no could have shown you no key at all.
A near miss is a yes with a condition on it.
What the condition is, you cannot learn from bed, so the whole thing points at your week rather than at your night.
