WEDNESDAY, 4 NOVEMBER
Dear friend,
I forgot the best dream I ever had. I know it was the best because I woke up saying so, out loud, to nobody, and by the time I picked up my phone it was gone.
That was a few years ago, and I still think about it, which tells you something about what forgetting costs when it catches you at the wrong moment.
The reason you forget is not complicated. During the part of sleep that makes most of your dreams, the chemicals that form lasting memories are running low, so dreams are built on ground that was never meant to hold them.
The ones you do remember are the ones you caught in the few seconds between sleep and waking, before your body moved and your mind turned to the day.

What disappears, and when
That window is small. Half of whatever you were dreaming can vanish within five minutes of waking, and nearly all of it fades within ten minutes. One thief is motion: you roll over, reach for a glass, sit up, and the part of your mind still holding the dream lets go because something louder took over.
Which is why the first rule of recall is not about writing. It is: do not move. When you wake, keep your eyes closed and let whatever is there come back on its own terms.
I know that sounds precious. It sounded precious to me too, until the morning I tried it and remembered a whole conversation I would have lost to the alarm.
It does not take long. You are not meditating; you are just refusing to leave the room before you check whether something is on the table.

Doctors Warn: Think Twice Before Drinking Bottled Water

You drink water every day to keep your body healthy.

But what if your plastic water bottle is exposing your brain to something harmful?

Scientists at the University of New Mexico made a disturbing discovery.

Plastic particle levels in human brain samples were nearly 50% higher in 2024 than in 2016.

Even more concerning?

Researchers found higher concentrations of these particles in brain samples from people with dementia.

While scientists haven't proven that plastic causes memory loss, the findings raise serious questions.

And here's something most people don't realize:

Heat can make certain plastics release even more microscopic particles.

That means some everyday habits could be increasing your exposure without you knowing it.

The notebook, not the phone
Then you write. And it has to be a notebook, not your phone, because a phone lights up, carries yesterday’s messages and tomorrow’s alarm, and both of those pull you forward into the waking day, which is exactly the direction the dream cannot survive.
A notebook does nothing. It sits there. You reach for it with your eyes barely open and write whatever you have, even if what you have is one colour, one feeling, one word.
You are not writing a diary entry. You are writing a receipt: something happened, and you are noting it before it disappears. I have pages in mine that say things like “stairs, the blue coat, someone laughing, not at me,” and a week later I read them and the whole thing comes back.
The strange part is what happens after a couple of weeks.

What starts to change
You start remembering more. Not because you are sleeping differently, but because you are there every morning with the notebook, and your sleeping mind begins to cooperate, the way a person tells you more once they see you are paying attention.
I am not sure why that works. The folk explanation is that you are training your dreaming mind to trust you. The plain one is that you are rehearsing a retrieval habit. Either way, the notebook fills up, and the mornings change.
I keep one on the floor by the bed now. Reach for a phone instead and the explaining part of you wakes up, and the feeling goes.
✦  WRITE BACK
Which one was harder for you: staying still, or picking up the notebook?
TELL ME WHICH ONE
Try it tonight. Put the notebook where your hand can find it before your eyes open. If you wake up with nothing, write “nothing” and close it. That counts too.
Sleep well,
Dream Signs

P.S. My neighbour writes dreams on the back of her hand because she cannot find the notebook in the dark. Tell me where you keep yours. Or where you plan to.
✦  TONIGHT’S PRACTICE
📝
The pad by the bed
Put a notebook and pen on the floor beside your pillow tonight. When you wake, lie still with your eyes closed. Do not move. Then reach down and write whatever you have, even one word.
Tell me what you wrote
✦  MANIFESTATION TIP
✨
Say it before you sleep
As you close your eyes tonight, say one sentence: “Let me keep something from tonight.” Not a command. A request. Let it go.
What came back
Did you remember something after writing it down? Tell me what it was.

✦
Dream it. Sign it. Live it.
