✦  TODAY IN DREAM SIGNS
The Drowning Dream
Your body woke you up. Your hands were full.
I HAD THIS ONE TOO

TODAY’S SYMBOL
Get the Guide
MONDAY, 2 NOVEMBER
Dear friend,
I had the drowning dream on Thursday night, which was strange because I am a good swimmer. The water was not an ocean or a pool. It was a stairwell, filling from the bottom, and I was climbing with a bag I would not put down.
I woke up breathing hard with one hand on my chest. Today is that dream.

What you were carrying
Water dreams are among the oldest on record, and in almost every tradition the water is not water. It is feeling: too much of it, rising faster than you can manage. The dream is your mind asking whether you plan to keep holding your breath.
🌊
The ocean
💧
A pool
💦
A flood
🌧
Rain
Tap the one that fits
The part that matters is usually not the water itself. It is what your hands were doing. In the version I had on Thursday the bag was heavy, and I could feel the strap marks when I woke. Which probably tells you something about what I have been carrying around.
Most people who write to me about this dream mention the same detail before they mention the water: they are gripping a railing, holding a child, clutching a phone, dragging a suitcase they packed themselves. The water is the pressure, but the weight in your hands is the question.

The Founding Fathers Had A Soundtrack

George Washington heard it.

Benjamin Franklin heard it.

Paul Revere heard it.

For over 300 years, this was locked inside private ceremonies performed by some of the most powerful men in history.

No recording existed.

No outsider had ever witnessed it.

Until one man… a member for twenty years… broke his oath of silence and captured it.

>> Hear what they heard

This isn’t a modern creation.

Nobody "designed" this in a lab.

It comes from a living tradition that predates the founding of America.

The same ceremony.

The same tones.

Passed down through generations behind closed doors.

The man who recorded it says he felt the effects in his bones the first time he heard it. Goosebumps.

Tears.

A sense that something ancient had just woken up inside him.

He’s now sharing it publicly for the first time.

The men who guard this tradition are not pleased.

But he believes it’s too powerful to keep hidden while good people are struggling.

>> Hear the recording before it’s taken down

P.S. He’s an accountant, not a guru. That’s part of why I trust him.

Water as feeling
There is a long tradition of reading water as emotion. I think it started because water behaves the way feelings do. It rises, it spills, it finds the crack you left in whatever you built to hold it.
Drowning, in that reading, is what happens when you stop making room. You hold your breath, you grip the railing, and the water keeps coming because that is what water does.
This is what people have said about it for a very long time. Whether that makes it true is your call.
✦  BEFORE YOU GET OUT OF BED
Tap one to answer it
1
What have I been holding onto with both hands?
2
What would I swim toward if my hands were free?
3
Where in my body do I hold my breath?
4
Who packed the bag I am carrying?
5
What am I afraid will happen if I let go?
6
When did the water start rising?
If you had this dream last week, or last night, pick one of those and sit with it before you try to answer.

Both hands full
The oldest question about a drowning dream is not what the water means. It is why you did not let go.
In almost every version I hear, the dreamer could have swum. The water was not the problem. Swimming required both hands and both hands were full, so the dream is not about danger but about a choice you have been putting off, because making it means releasing something you packed yourself.
Tonight, before you fall asleep, finish this sentence: the thing I have been holding onto with both hands is ___.
✦  CARRY THESE WITH YOU TODAY
I am allowed to put it down.
The water will not stop because I hold my breath.
I can swim when my hands are free.
What I need is already at the surface.
I do not have to carry it all at once.
Tap the one you need
✦  WRITE BACK
Which of those six questions was the hard one to sit with?
TELL ME WHICH ONE
That is today’s symbol. Tomorrow I am reading a dream someone sent me last week, and it is a good one.
Sleep well,
Dream Signs

P.S. My mother used to say “you can float if you stop kicking.” I thought she meant swimming until I was about thirty. Tell me what your people say about water. I collect these.
✦  TONIGHT’S PRACTICE
📝
The bag by the bed
Open your notebook. Write the end of that sentence from today’s letter. Underneath it, write one thing you would do tomorrow if your hands were free. Close the notebook and go to sleep.
Tell me what you wrote
✦  MANIFESTATION TIP
✨
One less thing
Tomorrow, carry one fewer thing than usual. Not the important one. The one you carry because you always have. See whether anything falls apart by evening.
What did you set down
Something happen after a dream this week? Tell me about it
