THURSDAY, 29 OCTOBER

| Dear friend, |
I missed a bus once, years ago, and stood at the stop for twenty minutes before I looked up. The next one was already at the top of the road, which meant the whole time I had been staring at my shoes and feeling stupid, the thing I needed was on its way.

That is more or less what the lateness dream is, the one we looked at on Monday: the train that pulls out, the gate that closes, the room you cannot find. Today I want to turn it around, because the dream remembers something you forgot.

The place was there
Your dream knew where you were going. It gave the place a platform, a number on the board, a departure time (specific enough to make you panic, which is generous of it). The destination was never the problem. You knew exactly where you were trying to get to, and the sleeping mind showed it to you in detail, because it has been watching you circle it for weeks.

What people have said about lateness dreams for a very long time is that they come when the dreamer is between things. Whether that is true is your call, but I notice it lines up: almost nobody writes in about this dream during a settled stretch.
The dream was pointing at something you already know: the place is still there, and you are the one who stopped walking toward it.

Whatever is coming does not depend on whether you feel ready for it.
