  • I Woke up Gripping the Edge of the Mattress
✦  TODAY IN DREAM SIGNS
The Dream Where You Fall
It knows something about what was holding you up.
I HAD THIS ONE TOO

TODAY’S SYMBOL
Get the Guide
MONDAY, 19 OCTOBER
Dear friend,
I woke up gripping the edge of the mattress. It was ten past four and my hands were still holding on.
The dream is always the same shape. The ground is there and then it is not. You feel the jolt in your chest for a minute after your eyes open, and I have never once caught myself before it hits, which probably says something about me.
Oh well.
People have been saying things about this dream for a very long time.

What Was Holding You Up
This dream has been said to mean the moment whatever was keeping you standing gives way. It might be your job, your grip on a plan, your sense of who you are, or your place in someone's life, and the dream does not usually say which.
Your footing
Your grip
Your plan
Your name
Tap the one that fits
Up to 70 percent of people get jolts at the edge of sleep, twitches that come with the sensation of falling. One theory holds the brain is catching you from a time when your ancestors slept in trees, a reflex left over from an age when losing your grip in the canopy meant dying. I am not sure I believe it.
The older story is simpler. Ovid wrote about Icarus two thousand years ago, a boy who flew on wax wings and fell into the sea when he went too high. Whether that makes it true is your call, though people keep telling the story for a reason.
“ The ground is there and then it is not.

The Founding Fathers Had A Soundtrack

George Washington heard it.

Benjamin Franklin heard it.

Paul Revere heard it.

For over 300 years, this was locked inside private ceremonies performed by some of the most powerful men in history.

No recording existed.

No outsider had ever witnessed it.

Until one man… a member for twenty years… broke his oath of silence and captured it.

>> Hear what they heard

This isn’t a modern creation.

Nobody "designed" this in a lab.

It comes from a living tradition that predates the founding of America.

The same ceremony.

The same tones.

Passed down through generations behind closed doors.

The man who recorded it says he felt the effects in his bones the first time he heard it. Goosebumps.

Tears.

A sense that something ancient had just woken up inside him.

He’s now sharing it publicly for the first time.

The men who guard this tradition are not pleased.

But he believes it’s too powerful to keep hidden while good people are struggling.

>> Hear the recording before it’s taken down

P.S. He’s an accountant, not a guru. That’s part of why I trust him.

The Details That Change It
How the dream reads depends on who else was there and how it went. Being alone in it means this is between you and whatever gave way, and if someone watched, there may be shame underneath the fear, because being seen in that moment changes everything.
Whether it was slow or sudden matters. A slow one is a long knowing, something you watched happen from a distance, and a sudden one catches you with no warning at all, so the feeling underneath is different even when the dream looks the same.
Ask yourself these before you stand up, while the jolt is still in your body.
✦  BEFORE YOU GET OUT OF BED
Tap one to answer it
1
Was I alone when I fell?
2
Did I see what was below me?
3
Was it slow or sudden?
4
What was I standing on before it went?
5
Did it feel like relief or like fear?
6
Did I try to hold on to something?
Not all of them will point the same way, because some of this is about control and some is about trust, and the feeling holds both.

Before You Stand Up
This dream gives you a feeling before it gives you a word. Before you stand up, name what was under your feet before it went: a job, a person, a version of yourself you were holding together. Write it down if you can, since the name fades faster than the feeling does.
The feeling is there because something has already shifted, and your sleeping mind noticed before you did. That is what people have said about this dream, and it is worth hearing once.
✦  CARRY THESE WITH YOU TODAY
I am allowed to fall.
I can let go and still be here.
Something shifted, and I noticed.
I do not need the ground to know who I am.
I woke up, and I was still here.
Tap the one you need
✦  WRITE BACK
One of those questions was harder to sit with than the others.
TELL ME WHICH ONE
You woke up and you were still there. Start with that.
Sleep well,
Dream Signs

P.S. A man at the hardware store told me he keeps having the dream where the stairs just end. Tell me who else was in the room in yours. He went back to counting screws after he said it, like it was nothing.
✦  TONIGHT’S PRACTICE
🌙
The sensation before the fall
Before sleep tonight, think of the last time you had this dream. When you wake, write one sentence about what was under your feet before it went.
TELL ME WHAT YOU WROTE
✦  MANIFESTATION TIP
💡
What you are holding
Name one thing you are afraid of losing, out loud, to one person today. Say only the name, not the plan to fix it.
WHAT CAME BACK?
Something come true after a dream? Tell me what it was
