Dear friend,

It rained indoors on Saturday night, in my sleep, and I have decided not to tell the landlord.

The water was coming through the ceiling in a thin steady line, and nobody in the house seemed bothered by it, least of all me, since somebody had already put a bowl down underneath.

Then I woke up almost cheerful, which is not the mood that description suggests, and the gap between the two is what I want to look at with you.

Rain is the one hardly anybody writes in about, because it feels like scenery rather than a sign, though it turns up in your letters more often than teeth do.

Some of it is the window

The sleeping mind will take whatever is going on outside and build weather out of it. That is not a guess, since sleepers who have had water put on their skin have come back with reports of sudden rain and roofs letting in.

None of which makes the dream empty, because the mind still had to choose what to do with the sound, and it could have made a river or a tap or the sea.

Rain is almost never the frightening part of a dream, so what people are usually describing when they write to me about it is a mood they have no other word for.

Being out in it and unable to get away goes with being worn down by something small and daily, while watching it from a warm room is a different creature altogether.

What people say it means

Rain has been read as washing off for about as long as anybody has been reading dreams at all, and I will say plainly that this is folklore rather than evidence, so whether it holds is your call.

What I notice is that it comes in most for people who are between things, after one part of their life has finished and before the next has got going, which is a stretch nobody has a good name for.

The bowl is the bit I keep going back to, since somebody had put it there before I came in, and the leak was already being handled by a person I never saw.

Rain that runs the whole length of a dream and never breaks tends to turn up in weeks where nothing is going badly, only nothing is moving, which is much harder to complain about than a disaster.

So look at whether you had any shelter, because the dream cares less about the water than about whether anybody had thought to put a roof over you.

Mine had a ceiling, a bowl and a person I never got a look at, and I woke up cheerful, so I am going to take it as the report it appears to be.
