✦  TODAY IN DREAM SIGNS
Why you do not remember
The recall research says something slightly annoying about the people who do.
I HAD THIS ONE TOO

TODAY’S SYMBOL
WEDNESDAY, 12 AUGUST
Dear friend,
I have kept a dream notebook badly for years, which is to say I have kept several, and all of them start in January.
So when somebody writes in to say they never remember anything, I am not in a strong position to be stern about it.
What I can do is separate the part of this that has been looked at properly from the part everybody repeats without checking.
The first is more useful than it sounds, and the second includes most of the advice you have been given.

It is not your memory
The people who come up with a dream most mornings are not better at holding on to them, because when you put both kinds in a sleep lab the difference that shows is how often they wake in the night, and the ones who wake more come back with more.
Waking is the mechanism. A dream you sleep straight through is a dream you never had access to, and a few seconds of surfacing is enough to move it somewhere you can reach.
Which is why the last one before your alarm is usually the one you get, and why the earlier ones are gone without you ever knowing they happened.
None of that is a character defect, and I would rather you heard it from me than went on taking it personally.
“ A dream you sleep straight through is a dream you never had access to.

The advice with less behind it
You will have been told that keeping a journal increases how much you recall, and it gets repeated so widely that it reads as settled.
It is not settled, because a paper in Consciousness and Cognition points out that most of the evidence compares what people write in a log against what they had guessed beforehand, and people guess badly, so some of the effect is the measuring rather than the remembering.
I am going to tell you to keep one anyway, since the honest version is that it seems to help the people who start out remembering least, and it costs a notebook.
That is roughly where most dream advice sits, useful and thinner than advertised.

How to actually do it
Keep it within reach of the bed so that you do not stand up, since standing up is where most of it goes.
Write in the present tense and start in the middle, at whatever image is loudest, because the beginning comes back once your hand is moving and it never comes back while you lie there waiting for it.
And write the mornings you have nothing, where one word will do, since the record of the empty nights is what tells you later whether anything actually changed.
✦  WRITE BACK
Of those three, one is the one you already know you will not do, and that is the one worth telling me.
TELL ME WHICH ONE
Give it a week before you decide it does not work for you, since a week is about how long it takes for the waking part to shift.
Sleep well,
Dream Signs

P.S. My sister keeps hers on her phone, which I have told her is a mistake, and she has remembered more than me every month this year. If you have a method I would disapprove of, tell me what it is. She was very pleased to be told.
✦  TONIGHT’S PRACTICE
📝
The pad within reach
Put it where your hand lands without you sitting up, and put a pen with it, because getting up to find one is where the dream goes.
Tell me what you wrote
✦  MANIFESTATION TIP
✎
Write the empty mornings too
One word is enough on the nothing days, since the blanks are what let you see later whether anything actually shifted.
What came back
Did something happen after a dream this week? Tell me
