✦ TODAY IN DREAM SIGNS
The one that comes back
Why some dreams repeat for years, and what tends to have to happen before they stop.
MINE COMES BACK TOO
WEDNESDAY, 30 SEPTEMBER
| Dear friend, |
I have been having the same dream about a train platform since I was twenty-two, and I have never once caught the train.
It is always the same platform, with the same green bench on it, and it turns up a few times a year without any warning I can detect.
Kris wrote back yesterday about the barber who would not stop, and said the chair has been coming back for years, which set the whole postbag off.
So today is the difficult end of the week again, and it is about the one that will not leave you alone.
What comes back
These dreams are rarely happy ones, and when researchers sorted a pile of them, most carried unpleasant feeling and about half had something threatening in them, which is not what you would expect from a mind choosing its own repeats.
They also cluster in hard stretches, since people going through one tend to report more of them, and their dream content comes back heavier across the board.
Which reads worse than it is, so let me put the other half of it beside it, because the same work keeps finding that people whose repeating dream has stopped look no different from everybody else.
These dreams stop on their own when the thing they are about changes. That is the part worth carrying around today, and it is the reason I am fairly relaxed about my platform.

Your Body Is Listening While You Sleep
You set intentions for your life…
Your nighttime routine may influence sleep, cravings, energy and how your body manages weight.
Tonight, set a different intention for your body.
Why it repeats
A dream that comes back is usually built round something that has not moved, so it is less a warning than a bookmark, sitting in the same place because the page was never turned.
That is why the endings are always the same, since you never catch the train, Kris never gets out of the chair, and the dream has no interest in a new ending while the old question is open.
Whether the question is one you could answer this month or one you will carry for years, I cannot tell you from here, though you generally know within about a second of being asked.
Mine is about a choice I made at twenty-two and have never properly gone back to, which I have known since roughly the second time I had it.
What to do with it
Date them. Write down the last few times it came and what was going on that week, because these dreams tend to arrive in clusters and the cluster usually has a subject.
Then change something small in the waking version, since the dream is holding the door open for a situation, and situations respond to phone calls and letters rather than to analysis.
If the one that repeats is a frightening one, use the method from a fortnight ago and write it a different ending in daylight, and if it is nightly or it began after something happened to you, take it to a doctor rather than to me.
✦ WRITE BACK
Repeats come in two kinds, the same story every time and the same feeling in different stories, and I would like to know which yours is.
TELL ME WHICH ONE
I have written the dates of mine on one page at last, which took ten minutes and which I have been avoiding for about fifteen years.
| Sleep well, |
| Dream Signs |
P.S. Kris tried saying that is enough out loud in his kitchen on Tuesday night, as instructed, and his flatmate called through from the next room to ask what he had done now. Tell me what yours is. He says the chair was not there that night.
✦ TONIGHT’S PRACTICE
| 📆 |
Date the last few
On one page, write down when your repeating dream last came and what was happening in that week. The subject tends to show up in the margin rather than in the dream.
TELL ME WHAT THE DATES SAID
✦ MANIFESTATION TIP
| 🛠 |
Move the waking version
Take the situation the dream keeps circling and do one small thing about it today, a message, a question, an appointment. Say what you want while you do it.
WHAT CAME BACK

Dream it. Sign it. Live it.
