✦  TODAY IN DREAM SIGNS
Three, quickly
Ola was not looked at, Yusuf got one back after decades, and Bernie keeps snagging on the wires.
I HAD THIS ONE TOO

TODAY’S SYMBOL
Get the Guide
TUESDAY, 18 AUGUST
Dear friend,
I have been putting three of these off, because each one deserves a whole letter and none of them is going to get one today.
So they get short answers instead, which is the arrangement I like least about Tuesdays and the only one that keeps the inbox from silting up.
All three turned out to be about the same thing, which I did not notice until I had them written down side by side on the back of an envelope.
Names used with permission, as always, and I have cut everything except what the dream needs.

Three of them, quickly
Ola flew low over a market where she used to work, close enough to see the tops of the awnings, and the whole of it was whether the people below would look up. They did not. Which puts the interest in the watching rather than the flying, since she built herself an audience and then refused it the one thing an audience is for.
Yusuf had not had one since boyhood and then had one on Thursday, which he described as being handed something back. He is old enough to have stopped expecting it, and is going through a change he does not name in the reply, so I will not guess at it. A dream that returns after that long is usually keeping time with something.
Bernie flies badly. Low, effortful, snagging on hedges and telephone wires, and she has to keep working at it or she comes down. She asked what she is doing wrong, and the answer is nothing. This version is common, and nobody writes about it because it does not sound like the good dream.
Bernie’s is the one I keep coming back to, because it is the only one of the three that sounds like most people’s actual lives.
“ This version is common, and nobody writes about it because it does not sound like the good dream.

What the three of them share
Not one of them asked what flying means. Ola asked whether she was seen, Yusuf asked why it came back, and Bernie asked what she was doing wrong, which is three different questions circling the same thing.
That thing is how well they are doing. Whether it was noticed, whether it has come back, whether it is being done properly. None of them treated the flight itself as the subject at all.
I do not think dreams are tests, and I would rather say that plainly than let it sit there implied. But a dream in which you are doing something impossible does hand you a rare chance to ask how you reckon you are managing, and all three of them took it without meaning to.
Which is the closest any of them are getting to an answer from me today, and I am sorry it is short.
✦  WRITE BACK
One of those three sits nearer your own nights than the other two, and that is the one that decides what I write next.
TELL ME WHICH ONE
If yours is the badly flying sort, I would especially like it, since I suspect there are far more of you than the good version lets on.
Sleep well,
Dream Signs

P.S. Bernie put one more line at the bottom, to say she had always assumed everybody’s flying was like hers, and that she now feels slightly cheated. If you found out this week that yours is the unusual kind, tell me which way. She was joking, I think.
✦  TONIGHT’S PRACTICE
📝
The height and the effort
Write down how high you were and how hard it was, since those two details are what separate the versions and hardly anybody records them.
Tell me what you wrote
✦  MANIFESTATION TIP
💬
Ask the smaller question
Rather than what a dream meant, notice what you asked about it first, because the question you reached for tells you more than the answer would have.
What came back
✦  BEFORE YOU GO
🌟
When it happens in daylight
If something turned up this week that matched a dream you had, that is the thing I most want to hear about, and the one people are shyest about sending.
Tell me what happened
