✦  TODAY IN DREAM SIGNS
The bad ones
What a nightmare is doing, and the one thing that has proper evidence behind it.
I GET THESE TOO

TODAY’S SYMBOL
Get the Guide
WEDNESDAY, 16 SEPTEMBER
Dear friend,
Not every stranger this week was a kind one, and I have been carrying one of those letters about with me since Monday without knowing what to do with it.
She has the same bad dream most weeks, has had it for years, and wrote to say she assumed there was nothing to be done about it, which is the part I want to answer.
Because there is something to be done about it, and it has been tested properly, and hardly anybody outside a sleep clinic seems to have been told.
So today is the difficult end of things, written for the people who dread going to bed rather than the ones who are curious about it.

What they are
A nightmare is a dream that wakes you, which is the whole of the definition, and it is why they come mostly in the last stretch of the night when your dreams are longest and you are nearest the surface.
They are not a punishment and they are not a warning, whatever the old books say, and they do not mean anything is wrong with you, since a great many people have them for a stretch and then stop.
What they do have is a shape, and the shape repeats, so most people who write to me can tell me the ending of theirs before they can tell me the beginning.
That shape is the handle, because a thing with a fixed ending can be given a different one, and this is where the tested part comes in.
“ You are allowed to write a different ending while you are awake.

Changing the ending
You are allowed to write a different ending while you are awake. Sleep clinics have people do exactly that, on paper, in daylight, and then picture the new version for a few minutes a day, and the old dream comes less often.
It sounds far too simple to work, which is what I thought, though it is the first thing the guidelines recommend and it has held up across trials in people whose nightmares came from something that happened and people whose did not.
The rule people are given is to change the dream well before the frightening part, because rewriting the worst moment means going back into it, while changing an earlier turn takes the dream somewhere else entirely.
You are not arguing with the dream, then, only giving it another road to take, and the new version does not have to be good, it only has to be yours.

When to hand it on
If they come most nights, or if they began after something happened to you, please take this to a doctor rather than to a newsletter, because what they will teach you is the same method with somebody sitting beside you while you do it.
That is not me passing you along, since I would rather you had the good version of this than my version, and the good version exists and is not hard to ask for.
If you are dreading bed tonight and have nobody to say so to, write to me, and I will point you at something better than a symbol.
✦  WRITE BACK
Two things make a bad dream stay with you, the story and the hour it wakes you, and I would like to know which is worse in yours.
TELL ME WHICH ONE
I have written back to her with all of this, and she has agreed to try it for a fortnight, and I will tell you how she gets on if she lets me.
Sleep well,
Dream Signs

P.S. She said one thing at the end that I keep thinking about, which is that in the dream she never once shouts, and that awake she is the loudest person in her family. Tell me how yours ends. She is going to try shouting.
✦  TONIGHT’S PRACTICE
✏
Change it early, in daylight
Write the dream down to the point before it turns, then send it somewhere else and picture that version for a few minutes. Do it in the afternoon, not at bedtime.
TELL ME YOUR NEW ENDING
✦  MANIFESTATION TIP
🔈
Say the loud version
Take the thing you want and say it today at full volume rather than politely, to one person, since the quiet version has been out there a while now.
WHAT CAME BACK
Something happened after a dream? Tell me
